Different types of wine glass

 

Wine glasses comes in many shapes and sizes. Some wine glasses are made taller while others shorter... some fatter... some slimmer... etc. All these different designs serve a certain purposes. However, most of them have a long stem which keep you from touching the bowl that can cause a rise in the temperature of the wine via the heat gain from your hand. At the same time this could also keep your finger prints away... surely you would not want a glass full of fingerprints from yourself as well as the one who serve the wine while admiring the amazing colors of the wine.    

Wine Glass - Burgundy Glass

The wine glass like Burgundy glass is larger and rounder  curved bowl as compared to its Bordeaux counterpart. It has generally a larger opening. It is usually up to 16 ounces although it could be larger. Its larger opening make it suitable for those wine exhibit more complexity  like especially the legendary Burgundy from France.   

Typically used for serving White and Red wine.

Wine Glass - Bordeaux Glass

The wine glass like Bordeaux glass are more common than its Burgundy counterpart and can be use as a "multi-purpose" wine glass except for serving the sparkling wine or champagne. It generally has a smaller opening as compared to the Burgundy Glass. The smaller opening help to converge and concentrate the nose of the Bordeaux.

Typically used for serving White or Red wine.   

Wine Glass - Champagne Flute

As for the wine glass like the Champagne Flute, it cannot be replace with a Burgundy or Bordeaux Glass. The Champagne flute totally belongs to another planet which spare no space for the Burgundy or Bordeaux Glass. This wine glass is certainly essential if you want to get the best out of those sparkling wines or Champagnes. This tall, narrow and tapering bowl to preserve the fizz or the mousse. 

When talking about Champagne Glass, most people relate to those champagne saucer shown in movies as well as in celebrations where they are usually stack up into a pyramid and Champagne pour right from the top.

Typically used for serving Sparkling wine or Champagne. 

Wine Glass - Fortified Wine Glass

The wine glass such as Fortified wine glass is typically smaller and narrower than the Bordeaux glass in considering its high alcohol content. One example: Copita is a traditional wine glass of Jerez, Spain the Sherry Region. This glass do pretty well with other fortified wine like the Porto and Ports as well.   

Typically used for serving Fortified wine.
